  • It is not only a fountain, but it is together with an obelisk. Actually it is not so easy to recognize the fountain itself as the focus is on the obelisk.  more »

  • In the center of the beautiful Piazza del Popolo was built in 1823 the Fountain of the Lions in marble and travertine by Giuseppe Valadier. the Fountain of the Lions that develops around the syline obelisk, has four corners with a step-by-step plinth, where round travertine pools are placed above which, always in steps, are placed white marble lions in Egyptian style from whose mouths large jets of water flow. Unfortunately, many tourists to take photos ride the lions damaging them.

  • This fountain, built in marble and travertine, was designed by Giuseppe Valadier in 1822, being inaugurated in 1828, as part of the renovation project of Piazza del Popolo, which had started in 1809, during the period of French domination. It was placed in its center, substituting an earlier source designed by Giacomo della Porta, which had remained in that place since 1572. It has a staggered base in which four corners are placed travertine basins on which are supported by pyramid trunks topped by some lions of white marble in Egyptian style, from whose mouths gush large jets of water. In the center of the fountain stands the Flaminio obelisk, which had been erected in this place by the wish of Pope Sixtus V in 1589. Today the ensemble shines in all its splendor, since the last restoration works date back to 2015.
