#37 of 164 in Museums in Rome
Get a sense of what the historical center of Rome looked like in ancient times at Crypta Balbi, which stands on the remains of an ancient theater. Part of a large complex of buildings, it shows the evolution of Rome by presenting various objects used by regular citizens living here between the 5th and 9th centuries CE. This often-overlooked cultural attraction also allows visitors to glimpse the painstaking work archaeologists performed to reveal the theater ruins. Take the basement tour to see dark passageways stretching beneath the ancient city center. Put Crypta Balbi at the forefront of your travel plans using our Rome day trip planning site.

  • terrible museum. I have never said such a thing for a museum in my life but this one deserves it. top floor has very little to see but more to read. it’s more like reading a book than visiting a museum. at the bottom floor you can see the remains of the old city with very complex descriptions to understand. I am leaving this building without understanding WHAT A CRYPTA IS. look at the photo attached and visit this museum if only you understand what it means. the only thing nice about it is it’s cool downstairs. there are much better museums in Rome. save your time, energy and money to them.
  • It was obvious that they tried really hard to set it up the best the could. It was very difficult to understand exactly what it was, I tried to watch the video because it looked interesting but it was in Italian I waited for the English version but it was too long. It is worthy of a small visit though .
