Complesso del Vittoriano, Rome

#9 of 164 in Museums in Rome
The largest monument ever to be constructed entirely of white marble, the structure at Complesso del Vittoriano was at first a point of contention. A medieval neighborhood had to be destroyed before the monument could be built. The majestic emblem, dedicated to the first king of unified Italy, was completed in 1925 and occupies a central point between the Piazza Venezia and Capitoline Hill. It embodies the classic school of Italian sculpture, with fountains, Corinthian columns, and statues of the goddess Victoria. The museum is at the base of the monument's pillars. Victorian houses that are part of the structure feature exhibits showcasing individual artists. Lockers are provided near the entrance. A visit to the rooftop garden will give you real appreciation of the Rome with no entrance fee.
