  • The Lateran cloister is a masterpiece of the Cosmatesque architecture, the work of the Vassalletto, (built between the second and Third decade of the THIRTEENTH century) is the largest cloister in Rome, and it is square-shaped (measuring 36 meters per side). Under the four arcades there are numerous works from the ancient Basilica. Worthy of note is the "papal chair" of the fifth century is the oldest existing throne.

  • It is the largest cloister we find in Rome and probably the most beautiful. It was built under the auspices of the Vassalleto family in the first half of the 13TH century, thus forming part of an existing Benedictine monastery prior to the current basilica. It constitutes one of the masterpieces of the Cosmatesco style, being the most striking of the same its columns, each one of a different style: straight, smooth, spiral, with furrows, and even covered with mosaics, which gives to the whole a magnificent aspect polychrome, Providing of exquisite harmony. Along the frieze are the heads of the lion, while the bases of the columns are available figures of lions and sphinxes. In the center of the cloister is the well of the Samaritana, which dates from the 9TH century. Other elements of interest that we can admire in the same are a copy of a papal bull of Gregory XI, the bronze door and the papal chair of Nicholas IV. It can be visited daily from 09.00 to 18.00 hours. The price of the entrance is €2. If we have the Omnia Card, the admission is free.
