Built to commemorate the founder of the Jesuit order, the 17th-century Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola features an interior with gilded ornaments, marble reliefs, and remarkable frescoes. Admire the church's Baroque facade before heading inside to study the fresco glorifying St. Ignatius. Covering the ceiling of the nave, it creates an optical illusion of a dome. You can wander the plaza where the church is located to see examples of Rococo architecture. Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola reviews
Great ceiling fresco and a cool trompe l'oeil painting that, if you stand in the right spot (it's marked on the floor) looks like a real dome more »
You walk through Rome and every corner and every church gives you magic, art, amazement. A few steps from the Pantheon there is one of the lesser known wonders of Rome, a church where it is possible..... more »
An image is worth a thousand words. Here you have three thousand words. These pictures say more than I could say. The details in this church are unbelievable. It is hard to belive people were able to build such a beautiful church in 1650. I recommend reading a bit about this church before visiting it!
I am not usually one for visiting Churches (or any religious venue) but we ended up popping into this one by accident and I am glad we did. It is absolutely stunning, with a beautiful structure covered in mesmerising paintings from the ground to the top of the dome. It had my 4-year-old asking me how on earth they managed to to make such a beautiful building without cranes and diggers- I had no answer other than to say ‘magic’. 😂 Needless to say, well worth a quick visit in between Pantheon and Trevi Fountains.
