Catacombe San Sebastiano is one of many catacombs in Rome. These underground burial places were first built in the first century CE to deal with the overcrowding in traditional cemeteries. Follow your tour guide through the tunnels and learn about the history of this underground burial ground. Begin your tour from the basilica that houses the marble tomb of St. Sebastian, for whom these catacombs are named. Wander through the dim underground passages and examine the Christian and pagan wall tombs, ancient graffiti, and many relics. To spend more time in the tunnels and see the relics more intimately, schedule a private tour--the catacombs are not accessible without a guide. Dress warmly, as temperatures are much cooler underground. Make Catacombe San Sebastiano part of your personalized Rome itinerary using our Rome trip planner.

Full disclosure, I am biased. My son, who died of leukemia a year ago today was named after St. Sebastian. My wife and daughter and I visited today. That said, just from a historical perspective it... more »

If you have never been to see Catacombs then be sure to stop and take this tour! It is a must see if you are in Rome. It takes 30 minutes and on a hot summer day the temperature underground is nice and cool! What you will see is amazing. Unfortunately you cannot take photos but it is amazing the tunnels that were dug 2000 years ago and how they buried their dead. There's an underground alter and a couple of restored burial tombs for wealthy families. You can take a taxi here or it's an easy 35min walk from the coliseum.

We did the catacombs walking tour, it was an moving and memorable experience. Respect to the remarkable history of these locations. Both disturbing and uplifting.
