One of the major works of 15th-century Renaissance architecture in northern Italy, Basilica di Sant'Andrea di Mantova is the central co-cathedral and minor basilica of Mantova. Commissioned in 1462 on the site of a Benedictine monastery (of which the bell tower remains), the building took 328 years to complete. The basilica is most famous for housing the Preziosissimo Sangue di Cristo, a relic that is believed to contain the blood of Christ. The building was originally erected in order to accommodate the many pilgrims who would flock over the centuries to see the sacred vessels. If you wish to enter the crypt to visit the reliquary, ask one of the church's volunteers. • It’s a stunning cathedral. One of the most amazing Italian marvels. The facade is modest. The inside is the explosion of classical beauty and creativity. Besides Palazzo Te, it was our best experience in Mantova.
  • Excellent food and service. This is a great place to try if you are traveling through and have some ability to communicate in Italian or are going with Italians. There servers we had did not speak English and the menus we're in Italian, but our friends recommend dishes and they were delicious!
