Chiesa del Gesu e dei Santi Ambrogio e Andrea, Genoa

4.7
Dating back to the sixth century, Chiesa del Gesu e dei Santi Ambrogio e Andrea is one of the oldest remaining churches in the area, with one very striking feature: its ceiling. Look up to see this masterwork completely coated in bright paintings and gilded in gold. If you manage to visit during sunset, the Baroque-style interior seems to glow under the sunlight. While much of the interior is original, the outside was completely reconstructed in 1894. • This is a gorgeous church in the heart of Genoa. The exterior may seem a bit plain, but the interior is just amazing. The alter has both paintings and statues adorning each side. Don't forget to...  more »
  • It's a huge Baroque church in the centre. No admission fee and I think everybody should visit it. The architecture is imposing but the main sights are the 3 masterpieces: "The Assumption of Mary" by.....  more »

  • Extraordinary baroque church with fabulous marble inlays plus three Rubens paintings.
  • Church apparently subdued, seen from the outside, especially if it comes from the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, but that is absolutely worth a visit for what is hidden behind the door, both architecturally and for all the works of art that exhibits. Floor, columns, domes, polychrome marbles everywhere, stuccos and a superb apse leave breathless. Behind The main altar, is the Circumcision of Rubens (of the same author another painting in the chapel of St. Ignatius), along the aisles and side chapels other paintings by the major European painters, among which deserves mention "the" Assumption of Virgin "by Guido Reni.
