Consecrated in 393 CE, Basilica di San Lorenzo is among a handful of churches that claim to be the oldest in Florence. The church in its current form, however, was not begun until the 1400s. Despite being built over many years, and diverging from the original plan in certain areas, it remains a great example of the early Renaissance style. The pulpits are late works of Donatello, and the church houses several Renaissance paintings, including Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy. If you want to tour the attached tombs of the Medici family, designed by Michelangelo, check the schedule for opening times. It has been eight years since I've visited Michelangelo"s stunning Laurentian library in Florence, built for the Medici family. I will never forget that feeling of first walking into the library, walking up the spectacular marble steps designed and cut by my favorite artist 500 years ago, not many people know that Michelangelo was an architect as well as a painter and sculptor.
Interesting because of the history but it's really not worth going inside. There is better art in the museums around here. The courtyard behind it with the old orange tree in the center is a nice place to get out of the sun and sit down for a moment
