Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena Reviews
A jewel of Romanesque architecture, a bit underestimated because not included in the traditional tour of the city. I was there for a wedding and the church atmosphere made the ceremony more intimate.... more »
This is a church usually no open to the public, We were lucky that the Touring Club was voluntarily to keep it open. Great art inside and a simple but relevant Romanesque architecture. The building..... more »
The church is a 5-minute walk from Piazza Duomo. The ceiling and the walls are painted with frescoes, and the voices and sounds of the performers echo throughout the church. It was a very sacred feeling. The sound of the bell ringing regularly in the city resonated in the church, and it sounded to the mind which was not able to be said.
Small 13th century church dedicated to Saint Clement. In the 15th century it was dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, when she was transferred, from the oratorio di porta Ognissanti, a statue of the Saint. Between 1623 and 1626, the floor was raised and the vaults of the chapels were lowered to the current measure. The operation was interrupted because of the plague epidemic and was not recovered, preserving the structure of the presbytery and the vaults of the nave. The decorations of the presbytery are still partially preserved. Partly hidden by the great altarpiece by Tommaso Aleni, depicting the adoration of the child and on the sides the stories of St Mary Magdalene and St Clement. In the first chapel on the right there is a wooden statue of San Rocco kickoff 1600; in the second a large wooden Crucifix, always of 1714. In the third the altar with the relics of St. Gerald, murdered near Cremona. The Church is kept open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 13 and from 16 to 19 by the volunteers of the Touring Club.
