Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, Camogli

#1 of 22 in Things to do in Camogli
Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
In 1000, Greek monks built Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, an ancient monastery nestled alongside a small, turquoise bay. The Romanesque building includes two lookout towers with heavy artillery, marble tombs for nobility, and a museum dedicated to the abbey's history and artifacts. This is also the site of the Christ of the Deep statue that watches out for divers. You can dive into the clear waters among the rocks and touch his hand. San Fructuosus' traditional fishermen's cottages and pine forests create a backdrop for the beach. In ancient times, sailors spread rumors of a dragon living in the caves here so they could keep the bay to themselves. The area is only accessible only by ferry ride from Portofino or via steep trails from Santa Margherita or Portofino Vetta.
