Villa Lante, Bagnaia

4.2
A nice place for a walk or picnic, Villa Lante features huge fountains, grottos, and ancient statues surrounded by shaded walkways and geometric shrub gardens. Composed of two Mannerist-style buildings, the villa itself dates back to the 16th century. The ducal family lived here until it was severely damaged in World War II. Dr. Angelo Cantoni then acquired and restored it. The garden is part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani, a garden association that includes many of Italy's historic gardens. • Love beautiful gardens...? This is definitely worth a visit! Reminiscent of Versailles, the gardens were constructed to give guests consummate views from multiple levels. Great use of symmetry...  more »

  • Wonderful gardens with very few visitors. We were with an Italian friend who has heard there was a free tour, but there were no signs and the guy at the ticket office didn't say anything, so we asked and our names were put on the list (you'll need some Italian to do it). Apparently a different one of the various buildings is opened for the tour each week. We saw inside the limonaia with a very bored and fast-speaking guide who told us Margaret Thatcher had stayed there, though the picture she pointed to on the wall was of Princess Margaret!!! The gardens are a little run down, but definitely worth seeing.
  • Gorgeous garden from the 13th Century. Be sure to do a little reading up on the history of Villa Lante before going in— you’ll be sure to have an even deeper appreciation, and respect for the space.
