  • A splendid Cistercian abbey named after the SS. Peter and Paul immersed in the Countryside of Lapdigiana: founded in 1084 by Alberico da Cassino as a Benedictine monastery, it was ceded to the Cistercians in 1139 by Pope Innocent II. The church is three aisles covered by vaulted straight cruises by mighty terracotta polystyle columns and pillars. As usual for the Cistercian order there is little room for pictorial decoration and the severe and frugal appearance is lightened by the bichrome given by the cooked on the white of the plaster. In the 16th century the abbey church also assumed the functions of parish, dedicated to the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The abbey was abolished in 1798 following Napoleon's edict. The church continued to serve as a parish. Bibliography
