Jam Gadang Bukittinggi, Bukittinggi

Monument · Tourist Spot
Take a moment to appreciate the Art Deco design of Jam Gadang Bukittinggi. The 26 m (85 ft) clock tower has undergone a few changes since its construction in 1926. Originally a dome affixed with a rooster capped the white tower, but the Japanese replaced this with an ornament resembling a Shinto shrine during their occupation. Following Indonesian independence in the 1940s, this was again replaced with the traditional Indonesian roof style still in place today. Horse drawn carts offering sightseeing tours gather in the clock tower square.
