Mount Sibayak, Berastagi

#1 of 9 in Things to do in Berastagi
Climb to the top of Mount Sibayak for panoramic views of North Sumatra. Anyone of average fitness can manage the trek, which takes about five hours if you climb straight up, or a little longer if you set off through the jungle from a nearby waterfall. You can also take a minibus part of the way up the volcano if you prefer a shorter two-hour climb. At the summit of this stratovolcano is a small crater lake, colored bright green due to the sulfurous gases that seep into it. On the way down, take a dip in the hot springs. Wear sturdy shoes, bring warm clothes, and be prepared for sudden changes of weather. You won't need a guide unless you take the jungle route, but you may still wish to consider one if you are inexperienced or visiting alone. • Geleng’s knowledge of the volcano is amazing. He made the tour very informative and interesting and looked after us very well. You do need a local guide, as there is a board at the start of the climb....  more »

  • Nice hike and breathtaking views! There is a lake crater where we can see steam hissing from vents. Gunung Sibayak is a suitable volcano for beginners. We were hiking in a group of 2 adults and 2 kids. It took us about 1.5 hours to the summit. There's a camping site at the foothills to consider for an early start to see sunrise
  • I barely squeezed this stop into my visit to Sumatra, but I'm so glad I did! Mount Sibayak is absolutely beautiful, and the hike is an enjoyable one. I took the local bus (green Kama bus) and hiked from the village. Did the whole thing on an injured ankle and an empty stomach, and found it easy. I do recommend going as early as possible in the day, as the clouds come rolling in and you lose the nice view from the top. I left at 6:30am and had maybe half an hour of nice views once I reached the top.
