Must see · Ruin · Tourist Spot
Marvel at wondrous skills of ancient stonemasons at Aihole, a historic temple complex known for Chalukyan architecture. This small village with a huge heritage of some 125 stone temples dating from the 5th century BC shows in the best possible way the evolution of early Indian architecture before it got canonized. This ancient city, the first capital of the early Chalukyas, is home to hundreds of beautifully carved temples some of which date back to the 5th and 6th century, most of them Hindu but also some Buddhist and Jain. See rock-cut temples, sacred caves, masterful carvings, four-sided towers with decorative layers of stonework, double-curved arches all in one place. Walk through well-paved walkways amidst palm trees and get a guide for all details.
