Visit the World Heritage Site of Jaisalmer Fort, a vast, sandstone complex that reveals a bustling town within its walls. Built in 1156, the “golden fort,” as the massive fortress is known, acted as a sort of camouflage for the city, blending in with the sweeping sands of the Thar Desert. Take a guided tour to learn about the history of the fort, or take your time and explore the narrow lanes, lined with craft shops, temples, and eateries. Perched on top of a 76 m (250 ft) tall hill, the fortress dominates the surrounding parts of the city and offers panoramic vistas. Jaisalmer Fort is a "living fort" as, unlike other forts, it has a vibrant community inside, of residences, businesses, temples, and of course, the fort itself which is now a museum. You could spend some time in the museum looking at the inside architecture, and if you would like to know more, hire one of the many guides who would anyway approach you right from the parking outside. You can get a great view of the city from the museum, and also from "sunset points" and many rooftop restaurants which advertise this. Inside the fort are several temples which also have typically intricate carvings on the outside, and are worth a visit. If you like shopping, you could spend good time going through shops that sell clothes, curios, antiques, crafts, and pretty much anything. Overall, the "golden fort" is a definite place to visit.
