#19 of 47 in Wildlife in Goa
Nature / Park · Wildlife Area
Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is located in northeastern Goa, India in Ponda taluka. The total area of the park is 8 km2. It is a popular destination for both tourists and schoolchildren. A wide variety of animal life can be encountered, including: sambar deer, Indian bison, Malabar giant squirrel, Indian peafowl and many species of snakes.
Bondla provides sanctuary to leopards who have been injured in human-wildlife conflict, as well as "dancing" bears and cobras who, along with their trainers, need a new life after this treatment of endangered wildlife. Bondla zoo is known for its successful breeding of gaur. As it is the only zoo in Goa, many visit the zoo. The zoo provides an excellent environment to breed and do researches on animals

  • It's a small zoo, but journey to this place is quite good if you are driving own vehicle, number of animals too less.  more »
  • Quite long journey but great to connect with Dudsagar and plantation trip. Big area, good to walk, not so much to see. I fall in love to kaurs - big pisons, the national animal of GOA. Go and just...  more »
  • Nice place well maintained. Good for a day picnic or overnight stay for groups or family. Best time is to go in the rains when nature is at its best. Can spot lot of monkeys and deer's in the wild... And the zoo has a lot of different animals. Please do not throw any plastic bags or bottles.
  • Just beautiful surroundings. The zoo (if you can call it that!) is in the worst shape I've seen in a long time. Most of the cages and enclosures are empty. Even the star attraction, the resident tiger which died a few months earlier hasn't been replaced. The cages are in disrepair and derelict. Even the road leading to the hippo and black buck locations is filled with rocks and you can end up with a broken ankle if you aren't careful! The saving grace are the staff who work tirelessly in face of great hardship and lack of funds. Some told me they sometimes use their own money to buy things for the animals like medicines etc. The Two Stars are for the staff and the remaining animals who put up with the misery. Lots more can be done. The area and space is beautiful and abundant. Use it better. Spruce it up. Goa is surrounded with wildlife and the Bondla zoo just doesn't live up to that image. Very, very sad.
