Pilgrimage Church of Wies became a pilgrimage site after the figure of the Scourged Savior began to weep tears in 1738. Local authorities converted a hasty chapel into a Rococo church in the late 1740s, hoping to make the supernatural visible. UNESCO recognized the church in 1983 as a World Heritage site. The setting, other attractions nearby, and the surprising size of this rural church make it worth the drive out here. Pilgrimage Church of Wies Reviews

We decided to stop over at Wieskirche on the way back from Neuschwanstein Castle. Parking is very convenient and is only Euro 2.00. There is a tourist information place with restrooms. The church... more »
Beautiful, quiet setting next to a farm and a field with cows with alpine bells constantly ringing. So amazingly charming. I could stay there forever
We spent a lovely hour here. We were lucky and arrived when it was reasonably quiet (3 coach loads of tourists arrived just as were leaving) This church has UNESCO World Heritage status. Though relatively plain from the outside it is ornately over the top inside and will stop you dead in your tracks. As I say in all my church and cathedral reviews, I'm not religious but I love looking at old religious buildings, they're either sparse and humble or totally over the top and if you've seen many churches in this part of the world you'll know they tend to be the latter. It is free to go in and there's donation boxes dotted about all over the place inside should the spirit compel you ... The car park costs €2 and if you need to spend a penny, you'll be spending 50c.
