One of the largest palaces in Europe, Baroque Palace Mannheim was built in the 1700s when Prince Elector Carl Philipp decided to transfer the Palatinate's seat of power from Heidelberg to Mannheim. Though greatly damaged during World War II, the palace has been greatly restored to its previous grandeur. Walk through more than 800 exhibits, including original tapestries, furniture, and paintings. Pick up an audio guide to learn about the previous inhabitants of the castle and its history. Docent-guided tours are usually given in German, but you can call ahead to arrange one in English.
