Touch a piece of history at Memorial of the Berlin Wall, the central memorial site of German division and reunification. At this open-air exhibit created in 1998, you'll learn why the country and the city were forcibly split for nearly three decades. The memorial incorporates a 60 m (200 ft) stretch of the original Berlin Wall, as well as the remains of several border installations and escape tunnels. At the visitors' center, you can pick up lots of materials detailing how the wall was created in the 1960s and dismantled in 1989. For a good view of the entire memorial grounds, climb up to the observation tower of the adjacent documentation center. For those who have lived the age of the Wall, for those who have not, this place is an exceptional opportunity to experience both; a stretch of the original wall, where East and West Berlin were at their closest points, has been partially kept up instead of being demolished; a line of rust-covered poles planted in the ground stand where the wall was demolished. The visitor has the opportunity of walking on and off the wall, in the former death zone, where the history of the wall is carefully explained; and exceptional black and white pictures are displayed everywhere. It is a wonderful experience to make in Berlin.

Berlin has mastered to get on with its life while showing (by way of keeping almost untouched stretches of the wall) what it once was like to live in a divided city. Mind blowing. On the tower of the documentation center you can not only see the ghost of the the past but also Berlin's amazing historical/modern skyline. I highly recommend the short film in the visitor center.
