Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

Brandenburg Gate was built in the 18th century as a defining symbol of the city, but it ended up in the middle of the no-man’s land separating East and West Germany for the better part of the 20th century. Today, this impressive monument epitomizes European unification and continued peace. It often serves as an attractive backdrop for special events, such as concerts. Architect Carl Gotthard Langhans designed the triumphal arch, finding inspiration in classical Greek architecture. He chose this spot to serve as the entry into the city’s renowned boulevard of linden trees. Artist Johan Gottfried Schadow’s sculpture of a winged goddess commanding a chariot crowns the gate. • This is the most special spot in of the Berliner history. I recommend it to every tourist. Visit it in the festival of light. It occurs annually. Every year there is a different program. So beautiful!
  • The neo-classical Brandenburg Gate, inspired by the monumental gateway at the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens, is one of Berlin’s most iconic sights. Curiosity: With the post-war division of Germany and Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate was in the Soviet sector. Later, when the Berlin Wall was built, the Gate stood in an exclusion zone in an arc of the Wall, inaccessible for locals and visitors alike Useful tip: Here you will find also a useful Berlin Tourist Info Center, in order to better plan your visit of the city.
