Alaverdi Monastery (Georgian: ალავერდის მონასტერი) is a Georgian Eastern Orthodox monastery located 25 km (16 mi) from Akhmeta, in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia. While parts of the monastery date back to 6th century, the present day cathedral was built in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti, replacing an older church of St. George.

  • Alaverdi is one of the first monasteries established in Georgia in VI century. The Cathedral was built later in XI. Currently this is an Abbey and one of the key centres of Georgian Orthodox church...  more »
  • Very well restored. Mystical place! Unfortunately you cannot go that much around the place and the cellar is under refurbishment till Nov.2019
  • High ceilings and frescoes are remarkable. It is also in the castle cultivating grapes and making wine.
