Fort National, Saint-Malo

Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Military Facility
Accessible on foot only at low tide, Fort National invites you to cross a drawbridge leading to the old walled city of Saint-Malo. The tour of the 1689 bastion made with granite walls helps you relive three centuries of military life at the fort. Visit the imposing cistern in the dungeon, the ammunition store, and the recreation of the legendary maritime attacks of pirates and privateer Robert Surcouf. When the French flag is raised, you know the fort is open. Put Fort National into our Saint-Malo trip app to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Saint-Malo.

  • We walked across at low tide and it was beautiful. The stairs were steep at times but it was not crowded and people socially distanced. There are warning signs, to be aware of the tides. Amazing...  more »
  • However, Saint Malo has very dangerous tides. Do not try to walk out - or back - when the sea is coming in - there are usually locals on hand to warn you. Please take heed.  more »

  • Lovely beach combined with old town. Parking difficult on prime days in summer but cost reasonable. Free public toilets by tourist information but might have to queue
  • Another view of Saint-Malo, loved the rusty cannon balls on the terrace! Only possible to visit by low tide (~11h - ~15h).
