Lake Assal, Djibouti

#1 of 12 in Things to do in Djibouti
Must see · Water Body · Nature / Park
Dip your feet in the salty waters of Lake Assal, a crater lake situated at the top of the Great Rift Valley in the Danakil Desert. Although rich in minerals, the lake water does not support any life other than bacteria. Still, salt collection here--in the world's largest natural salt deposit--provides an income for local farmers. One of the hottest places on earth, the underground of the lake continuously evaporates, creating ever more layers of solid salt bed, over which you can even drive a car. Gaze at the surreal, sunken landscapes with scant thorny bushes, camels, lizards, small birds, and insects. • Very nice place to discover but it as a long drive on roads that are presently under repair. We did bring some salt souvenir back...makes a great picture standing on a sand bar.  more »
  • The scenery is unlike any other place on earth. I camped overnight and saw both the sunset and the sunrise. AMAZING  more »
  • Very interesting salt lake on a very remote location. Basically there is nothing around. It can get very windy and very hot. So be prepared, bring an ice box full of water, drinks and food. Prefer to go there early in the morning to avoid the heat. Enjoy the view and water, it is magical.
  • Very beautiful Worth the drive from Djibouti
