Kostel sv. Mikuláše, Prague

4.5
An outstanding example of Baroque architecture in Central Europe, Kostel sv. Mikuláše dominates Prague's skyline with its iconic green dome. Constructed in the early decades of the 18th century, the structure replaced a Gothic church also dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The building's star attractions are its frescoes, sculptures, and a 4,000-pipe organ, reportedly played by Mozart in 1787. The ceiling frescoes, created by Johann Lukas Kracker, include an image of a Jesuit monk who, despite repeated injunctions not to do so, hid behind one of the columns and secretly watched the artist at work. Try to spot him by standing directly under the domed ceiling or by climbing to the church's viewing gallery. By using our Prague road trip planning website, you can arrange your visit to Kostel sv. • What got my attention with this church was the dome. The green dome had traces of gold which was very eye-catching. The spires by the dome were also quite nice. The carving all along the side and front of the church are quite remarkable. We didn't get a chance to take a look inside but I would guess it would be as spectacular. The column of the Holy Trinity is outside of this church.
  • We thought it would be good to experience a concert while in Prague and were approached by ticket seller as we passed this Church, so it was a spontaneous decision to buy tickets with out much knowledge. The venue is stunning at night, there were comfortable cushions on the pews and we had a front row seat. There were 7 members of the chamber group, a soprano and an organist played. We were enthralled! The acoustics were excellent, the music was beautifully played with great skill and the program would be familiar to most people. It was super to hear the organ being played. A great memory of Prague.
