Trip Planner: Central America / Costa Rica / Province of Alajuela / Arenal Volcano National Park / La Fortuna de San Carlos / Proyecto Asis
Tour or participate in the conservation efforts at Proyecto Asis, a wildlife shelter and education center. Daily visits provide insight into the work necessary to nurture wounded and abandoned animals before they are reintroduced into the wild. You can make a significant contribution if you volunteer, getting up close and personal with the animals as you help make toys for them, build new enclosures, and help prepare their food. Call or check the website in advance, as prior reservations are required before visiting. Plan your visit to Proyecto Asis and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our La Fortuna de San Carlos online road trip planner.

One of our families favorite activities while in Costa Rica! We came for the tour and half day volunteer program and absolutely loved it! We learned about the animals and the work done here and it is.... more »
We came here so my son, who's autistic, could see the animals up close. We were treated to a special tour, which was perfect for my son as he wouldn't have done well keeping up with the group. The... more »
Unfortunately, we were told on the phone by the receptionist when booking that the second tour is about feeding animals, not cleaning the cages (misleading information), but it wasn’t possible to cancel that extra part of the tour. That really ruined our experience. Lying on the phone and then not letting you cancel the tour is really a horrible practice. The animals you see inside cages are mainly former pets - monkeys and parrots. The tour is tailored for children ages 3-7, so if you’re an adult, most probably, you won’t like it. The tour group is rather big. It looked like a rescue zoo for kids.
This was an incredible experience that is tough to completely describe in this review. First of all the location of the rescue center is a really beautiful village near the Arenal volcano area. You can hear howler monkeys and other birds in the nearby forests before you even park. Once we started the tour, we couldn't believe how enthusiastic and intelligent our tour guide Carlos was! Carlos was very caring and knowledgeable about the animals at the shelter. We were so surprised by just how much we had learned about the animals at the rescue center and how interesting it all was. At the time they had tons of parrots, macaws, Kuwaitis, toucans, white-faced monkeys, spider monkeys, and more! After taking a tour of all the animals that were there we prepared food for them. Feeding the animals was an extremely fun experience and you really felt like you were helping out! I 100% recommend this tour to anyone and it is a MUST DO if you are in the area!
