Ciudad Perdida, Santa Marta

#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Santa Marta
Trek to Ciudad Perdida, a pre-Columbian abandoned city dating from 800 CE. The fairly straining hike takes about four days and brings you across the jungles and rivers of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Hiking with a native guide can help you learn more about the landscape, culture, and history of the area. Climb 1,200 stone stairs to reach the base point of Teyuna (the indigenous name of the ancient city). Explore the ruins of what is thought to have been the capital of the Tayrona civilization, abandoned when the Spanish colonialists came to the area. Put Ciudad Perdida on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Santa Marta sightseeing planner.

  • This was a truly remarkable and gruelling trek. Three days up and down in the rainy season. Tough. Soaking wet. Tired. Gorgeous. Spiritual. Mind blowing. Unforgettable. Wonderful. Made some great friends on this trek and the trail is a good test of fitness with some remarkable views at the end.
  • Looks like simple and beautiful spot but I'm quite fascinated by its environment and surrounding.
