Tourists often overlook this small, affluent neighborhood, boasting the same beautiful beach as Copacabana, but you should join the local residents enjoying the quiet, laid-back vibes of not only their part of the beach, but the excellent restaurants and bars too. Another attraction of Leme is Morro de Leme, a small 210 m (700 ft) mountain, and if you take the cobblestone path that winds up through lush tropical rainforest, along the way, you will see a wide variety of native flora and fauna, as well as the 14 “Stations of the Cross”, beautifully depicted in bronze and copper. At the top is Forte do Leme, built in 1777 to protect Brazil from a Spanish invasion, and now a tourist attraction with fantastic views of Rio, Pão de Açúcar--Sugarloaf Mountain--, and across Guanabara Bay as far as Fortaleza de Santa Cruz, in Niterói. Look to the trees and you will see Sagui monkeys; if you bring some fruit, you will make several new friends.
