Get a sense of medieval medical practices at Sint-Janshospitaal, a hospice and hospital dating back to the Middle Ages. The displays combine antique medical equipment with 15th-century artwork. Learn about the early medical experiments and procedures that helped doctors understand more about the human body. Along with the medical instruments is a collection of Hans Memling's religious artwork dating back to the 1400s, and hospital documents that reveal the nature of the ailments treated there. Save your ticket and use it to enter the apothecary next door, which features a recreation of a medieval medicine vendor with healing herbs and potions arranged along the walls, just as they would have been centuries ago. Could not praise this place enough. Inspiring insight not only into early hospital run by nuns with art work, old carried chaise 'ambulance', herb garden and pharmacy laid out as used then, giving a real feel of the place as used then, but also lots of religious art and artifacts that are genuinely intriguing and each with a voiced description in your own language provided by a recorded player held like a phone to the ear so not distracting others (my 8yr old glued to). We also loved being shown the areas used by nuns to live, felt like a kid again exploring an beautiful old mansion. Staff in shop helpful and friendly. Would highly recommend to all.

2 buildings to see in this museum. The 1st building is the actual hospital but it was mostly full of paintings. The room it was in used to be the patient ward. The 2nd building was more interesting. It was the old pharmacy back then. Very interesting.
