Holy Spirit Cathedral, Minsk

4.7
Religious Site · Church
At Holy Spirit Cathedral, see the miraculous icon of Theotokos, which purportedly appeared on a riverbank in 1500. The cathedral was originally erected as a part of a Bernardine monastery in the 17th century. Notice the golden-blue image of the Holy Virgin on its white front exterior, flanked by two tall bell towers. Allegedly, part of the church served as a transit prison for evicted kulaks, and the building also served as a gym and an archive. • A beautiful church with a simple but imposing green and white exterior, that is in total harmony with its surround. The mass One of the landmarks of the city of Minsk. The Sunday mass was excellent with people attending it in full religious devotion.
  • One of the most instantly recognisable symbols of Minsk is this magnificent, gleaming, two-towered Orthodox cathedral in the heart of the city. Completed in 1642 as part of a larger ensemble to serve Bernadine nuns, consecration was delayed for 40 years because of the Muscovite invasions. In 1741 the original structure was damaged by fire but later reconstructed. The convent was closed in 1852 and the building given to the Russian Orthodox Church for use as a monastery before being closed by the Bolsheviks after the October Revolution. Today the church has been restored to its former glory. Look out for the famed Minsk Icon, supposedly dating from around 1500.
