At Church of Saints Simon and Helena, you'll see two small towers representing the children of the church's patrons. A rich Belarusian family ordered the red church to be built after the premature death of their two children, Simon and Helena, in 1908. The large tower on the city's best-known Catholic building represents the parents' grief. Notice a bronze statue in front of the church depicting Archangel Michael slaying a dragon. During Soviet times the church served as a theater and a cinema. Do not miss a memorial composition of a Nagasaki bell next to the church. The bell is an exact replica of the original bell from Urakami Cathedral, which was destroyed during the nuclear bombing on August 9, 1945. The outside surface, brick is visually very pleasing but like most churches, it's the inside that really inspires. The main door is a massive, heavy affair with beautiful stained glass. The alter... more »

Historical church opened 'day and night', government made 'restoration' there - and everything is much worse than was before. But you still can find a beautiful church with electro organelle, pray as far as you need and buy some church goods. Library, chapel for private pray (well, it is nearly always too loud around, but the Holy Gifts are always showed for adoration.) Poor toilet, take own toilet paper is better.

Beautiful red brick church. I wish I spoke Belarusian to be able to read more about the relics inside. Well worth a trip!
