At Khatyn Memorial, see the sculpture of the only survivor of Khatyn--a village burned by the Nazi punishment battalion in World War II. The 6 m (19.7 ft) tall bronze sculpture represents a grieving father holding the lifeless body of his son. The sculpture stands amid 26 bare chimneys with bells--creating an image of a burned village. The bells of Khatyn ring every hour to remind people about this horrible crime against humanity. The memorial was built on the site of the former village in 1969. A handful of soil from each of the 185 burned Belarusian villages was brought to Khatyn to create a symbolic graveyard.
