Built as a summer day residence for Markus Sittikus (who was both a prince and an archbishop), Schloss Hellbrunn is famous for its trick fountains. The palace was built from 1613 to 1619 as a place of celebration. Sittikus designed the fountains and water-powered figures in the palace's park to entertain and confuse his guests. The trick fountains spray at seemingly random moments, so be prepared to get a little bit wet. Visit the grottos to see representations of Greek mythology, and watch the water-powered show of Perseus freeing Andromeda and Apollo flaying Marsyas. Walk through the palace to get a feel for how the prince and his noble guests celebrated. The park was designed as a show of contrasts of light and dark, fire and water. Schloss Hellbrunn reviews
We drove out here from town to view the Sound of Music gazebo. Do your research as the gazebo is only from exterior shots. Fortunately it is outside the gates so you don't need to pay to see it if... more »
On our first visit here years ago, I got pretty wet from the trick fountains. This time we were with teenage grandchildren, and they were the ones to get soaked. It's really one of the "must-sees... more »
TL/DR: this place is not for me or for small kids, but if you like palaces and history, then it might worth a visit. This palace was a disappointment for us. We choose this because my kids like fountains so we thought the tour will be great for them. Unfortunately it wasn't, because it was not about watching beautiful fountain show. Instead, the "entertainment" is that the guide splashes water from hidden tubes to the visitors. We found it really annoying, even the children hated it. The second part of the program is to visit the palace with the provided audio guide. If you're into history maybe you will like it, but we didn't. All that I remember is that there was an arrogant bishop who forced everyone to work for them, and ruined their life just for fun. I felt sorry for everyone who had to live with him. The castle is well maintained and the visit is free with Salzburg card. Guided tours starts about three times an hour. Parking is for fee next to the entrance, but there are some free parking places halfway between the palace and the zoo, next to the road.
Water features are interesting and fun. Beautiful gardens which are free to enter. Would be the ideal place for a family picnic as children's parks are also here. Cafe's are also at the house
