Perched atop a hill overlooking Salzburg, Fortress Hohensalzburg bears witness to more than 900 years of Austrian history, demonstrating the supreme power of the archbishops. Construction of this massive fortress began in the 11th century at the request of Archbishop Gebhard I of Helffenstein. The project continued over the centuries, finishing in 1501. Visit the regency rooms, torture chamber, illuminated lower church, and the fortress museum. At an altitude of 506 m (1,660 ft), the watchtower provides views of Salzburg. Purchase the Fortress Card to take advantage of the funicular ride up the steep hill, and delve deeper into the fortress' history with an audio guide. • If you are a walker I highly suggest walking up to the Castle if no than there is a tram that will take you almost all the way up. The Castle has been renovated and I'm not sure it was a good idea...

  • Place was pretty cool. Transit or ability to walk to the actual castle. Thought it was cool to have both. The actual museum was slightly disappointing though. Had some cool displays, however, I felt as tho they could do way more. A lot of the actual castle was not able to be explored or seen. This is what I was expecting. Not expensive to go or see and the surrounding area is also very beautiful with plenty of shops and places to eat. There are several building of historic sights surrounding and the architecture is very stunning. Would recommend.
  • Loved the place. One of the oldest castle of European history. The inbuilt museum narrates you the story of Austrian empire. You will be thrilled to see the scenery around the castle. One side it covers scenic beauty of Alps mountains and other side it give you the panoramic view of the whole city and mountain river flowing through it.
