Known internationally as a leading example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture, St. Patrick's Cathedral has the distinction of being both the tallest and the largest church building in Australia. The foundation stone was laid in 1858, but the cathedral wasn't finally completed until 1939. The 19th century Catholic community of Melbourne was almost entirely Irish, so the cathedral was dedicated to Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Attend Sunday mass for a chance to hear the renowned Saint Patrick's Choir, founded in 1939 when the Vienna Boys Choir found itself stranded in Australia at the outbreak of war. You can also drop by during the week to take photographs and learn about the city's heritage. Although I am a Muslim but for me all the other religions are equally respectable and important. No matter which temple I go I believe that we all have one God. In St Patrick's cathedral I too felt a strong sense of spirituality and peace, when I made a prayer and lit a candle. St Patrick's cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen.

The biggest cathedral in Melbourne? Escape from the crowded city, it is a great place to visit. The building is under good protection, very recommend to visit it rather than the other cathedral in Flinders St, cause there are too many visitors and too noise.
