Cape Byron Lighthouse, Byron Bay

4.7
Siting on the most easterly point of the country's mainland, Cape Byron Lighthouse was constructed in 1901 and fully automated in 1989. The iconic white tower attracts nearly half a million visitors each year, offering commanding views of the ocean and the coast. Take a guided tour and learn more about shipwrecks at the museum below. Remember to bring a pair of binoculars to watch humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles. You can also stay overnight at the former lighthouse keeper's residence or one of the two cottages once occupied by assistant keepers. • My husband and I had a lovely morning visiting the lighthouse. After 9am you can visit the museum and get some free tickets to the lighthouse tour! Please make a donation to help maintain this beautiful landmark. The volunteers are extremely helpful, lovely, friendly and have so much knowledge about this place. There very passionate for their work, and visitors can see that. The little museum explains a little about the Byron bay wildlife, the history of this particular lighthouse and Byron bay history too. It's a must do!! On the day we were visiting the last tour was done at noon, so make sure you arrive early. And maximum 10pp per tour. Kids under 5 can't go as on the top there are no nets and the wall is high, so they wouldn't be able to see the view and it's dangerous to level them up.
  • Stunning views in arguably one Australia's most beautiful locations. Situated on the most Easterly point of Australia's mainland, the lighthouse is a beacon (not just for sailors) that draws crowds from around the country and world. Well worth a visit but expect to have issues with parking at busy times. If you're up for some exercise then leave the car down below at Main Beach or elsewhere and do the 4km walk round trip and rated easy (but not accessible by wheel chair or other mobility aids). Loads of spectacular views, wildlife, historical info and a bite to eat at the cafe.
