Skanderbeg Square, Tirana

Landmark · Tourist Spot
Visit the statue of a national hero at Skanderbeg Square, in the center of the city. During the Albanian monarchy the square was surrounded by municipal buildings, hostels, and a bazaar. However, many of these were destroyed during communist rule and replaced with modern office buildings. In the center of the square is a statue of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the national hero credited with unifying the Albanian people. The statue is surrounded by an oblong section of grass and rows of trees in semi-circles at either end of the park. Cars can drive around the square, and you'll have to cross a busy street to enter the National History Museum next to the square.
